Dear Vice-president,
As members of the Protestants and Catholic churches in the Netherlands we kindly request your attention to the following
matter.
We are very concerned about the situation of Rev 0bed Komba, Rev Yudas Meage, Yafet Yelemaken, Murjono Murib
and Amelia Yigibalom, all members of the Papua Council Presidium.
On 10 March these leading political activists in Wamena, Papua were sentenced to between four and four-and-a-half years in prison after being found guifty of "conspiring to commit separatism". They have been accused of "masterminding" a series of violent incidents that took place in Wamena in October 2000, in which over 30 people were killed.
However, there is no evidence that the five were involved. In fact, there are reports that at least some of the defendants
attempted to calm the situation. Now peaceful political activists are being silenced behind prison bars. Therefore we call for the immediate and unconditional release of these five peaceful political activists.
Also on 10 March 17 pro-independence supporters were sentenced to prison terms of between one-year nine month and three-years-six-months after being found guilty of attacking the police and carriying weapons without a license. These defendants were kicked and beaten by the pofice following their arrest in october 2000 and during the course of their trial.
We learned that both Wamena trials were conducted in a tense atmosphere of intimidation and secrecy. No
International observers were allowed. A heavy armed police presence around the courtroom made many local people afraid to attend the sessions. While we recognize the responsibility of the authorities to bring to justice those responsible for acts of violence, this must be done according to international standards for fair trial.
Therefore we call to review the trial in accordance with international standards and to conduct an independent inquiry into all allegations of torture and ill-treatment of detainees by the security forces.

Nederlandse sarnenvatting van de brief aan de vice-president
Als leden van de kerken in Nederland spreken wij onze bezorgdheid uit over de situatie van de vijf politieke activisten. Zij zijn veroordeeld voor samenzwering en afscheiding, en beschuldigd van het leiden van gewelddadige acties waarbij tenminste dertig doden vielen. Dat is echter niet bewezen; er zijn berichten dat enkelen van hen juist geprobeerd hebben de mensen te kalmeren. Nu zitten deze vreedzame politieke activisten in de gevangenis. Wij vragen u hen onmiddellijk en onvoorwaardelijk vrij te laten.
Ook attenderen wij u op de andere aanhangers van de onafhankelijkheid die werden veroordeeld voor het aanvallen van de politie en het dragen van wapens zonder vergunning. Zij zijn bij hun arrestatie en gedurende het proces geslagen en geschopt door de politie.
Beide processen verliepen in een sfeer van intimidatie en geheimhouding. Er was een grote politiemacht bij aanwezig en internationale waarnemers werden niet toegelaten. Wij erkennen uw verantwoordelijkheid als regering om hen, die gewelddadigheden begaan, voor de rechter te brengen. Tegelijk wijzen wij u er op dat processen naar internationale normen gehouden moeten worden.
Daarom vragen wij u de processen te herzien en een onafhankelijk onderzoek in te stellen naar de berichten over martelingen en slechte behandeling van de gevangenen door de veiligheidstroepen.
